Stick to Reading!
Previously, students have been learning to read. From now on, students are reading to learn. Just like any other skill, it gets better with practice. Students should be reading 20 minutes or more at least 5 days a week. Encourage students to read from a variety of materials such as fiction, nonfiction, magazines, newspapers, or even cereal boxes! Encourage your child to read to the wall, the dog, a sibling, or to you. Ask your child about what they are reading, even when they are reading to themselves, in order to check their understanding.
5 Finger Rule
In order to help your child choose a book, use the 5 finger rule. Choose a page or paragraph midway through the book that is about 100 pages long. Have your child put up 5 fingers. Each time they come to an unknown word, put a finger down. If all 5 fingers are down by the end, the book is probably too difficult for independent reading.
Reading Level
Many books will put the grade equivalent reading level on the book. Many time it will be found on the back cover on the bottom right hand corner in small print. It will be a number,a decimal, and another number which represents the grade and month. If you have questions, try checking on line or ask me.
Recording Reading Minutes
Please record the time your child spends on reading outside of school on the monthly calendar found in your child's assignment book. I keep a weekly record that is used for a celebration at the end of the year and for report cards.
